Mayo Clinic Aviation Medical Examiners and support staff work as a team with other Mayo Clinic doctors and health professionals trained in many specialties to treat the whole person. Each member of our team dedicated to providing the highest level of service and expertise to pilots with health care needs.

Team

Clayton Cowl, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Clayton Cowl is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) and a HIMS AME. Dr. Cowl is also the Chief of Business Development in Public Health, Infectious Diseases, and Occupational Medicine with a dual appointment in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. His experience in Pulmonary Medicine in addition to Occupational and Aerospace Medicine lend to providing specialized care for the aviation community. He also served as the President of the Civil Aviation Medical Association and he is a commercially-rated pilot. His dedication to pilots and extensive collaboration with the FAA and other pilot organizations has complemented the services we offer our patients.

Team

Gary Toups, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Gary Toups joined Mayo Clinic Aerospace Medicine as a Fellow in 2016 before becoming the Medical Director of Mayo Clinic Hyperbaric/Hypobaric Medicine program. He is a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) and a HIMS AME. Dr. Toups served with the United States Air Force as a pilot flying many aircraft including the B-52 and F-111. He has Master SCUBA Diver Certification and dives throughout the world.

Team

Simon Kung, M.D.

Dr.  Simon Kung is a psychiatrist who joined the Mayo Clinic staff in 2004. He became a HIMS Psychiatrist in 2016 and has worked closely with Dr. Steven Altchuler and Dr. Daniel Danczyk (now at the FAA). His psychiatry expertise is in depression and bipolar disorders. he also provides consultation on conditions such as anxiety and addiction.

Greg Couser, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Greg Couser joined Mayo Clinic in 2005 with board certification in both Psychiatry and Occupational Medicine. In his role as HIMS Psychiatrist, he draws on his vast experience helping employees navigate workplace mental health issues. Besides his focus on preventive mental health, he spends time long-distance running.
